The climate business network Climate Leadership Coalition (CLC) has published a report, At the Crossroads, on 3 September, which brings together the key factors that affect climate change and measures to mitigate it. The authors of the report are CLC’s CEO Jouni Keronen and Mari Pantsar, Director of the Sustainability Solutions theme at the Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra.
“The report describes how humankind stands at a three-way crossroad. Now is the time for us to choose between a systemic solution, a ban economy and a boiler room. Extreme weather events, reinforced by climate change, are weighing on us in an unprecedented way. A large number of countries have set targets for mitigating climate change, but they are yet to lead to measures of sufficient scale. The biggest challenge is to increase the amount of climate solution investments. If we are unable to scale up the investments required, we will face rapidly deteriorating – even menacing – circumstances. We must act without delay,” say Keronen and Pantsar.
CLC will hold a discussion on the At the Crossroads report for its members and partners on Microsoft Teams on 6 September. The discussion will be chaired by Sitra’s President Jyrki Katainen and the panellists will include Pekka Haavisto, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Raffaele Mauro Petriccione, Director General at DG CLIMA, and John Denton, Secretary General of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). The seminar will be addressed by George Kell, founder of the UN Global Compact initiative and Richard Corey, Executive Officer, California Air Resources Board.
In his review of the report in Forbes, George Kell writes: “At The Crossroads has great educational value. It is available free of charge and it is to be hoped that policymakers, business leaders, educators and laypeople will read it and absorb its message. Climate leadership, as the authors convincingly argue has to be everybody’s concern.”
“I hope that this publication provides readers with more information about climate change and the measures required to mitigate it. I’d ask the readers do your best at home, at work, at school and in your free time, and to encourage others to get involved, too. We do not have much time, but I believe that the worst consequences of climate change can be avoided if we act without delay,” says in the report Antti Herlin, one of the founders of CLC and Chair of the Board of Directors of KONE Corporation.
The report is an updated version of the English edition of the book Tienhaarassa by Pantsar and Keronen, published in Finland in 2019. It was nominated for the Finnish Association of Business School Graduates’ Literature Prize in 2020. The judging panel awarded a special commendation to the book, offering these grounds: “The timeliness of its publication and the subject’s societal importance mean that the book offers a significant contribution to the debate on climate change. It demonstrates thought leadership in the subject as well as tangible solutions and proposals for how to deal with the issue.”
Climate Leadership Coalition is the largest non-profit climate business network in Europe. Its 87 members employ 520 000 people globally.
